Getting There: Depending on the U.S. departure city, airlines serving Edinburgh's International Airport include United Airlines and British Midland Airways. Nearby Glasgow International Airport is served by United Airlines and Air Canada. If you are planning an extended trip through England, airlines serving Londons Heathrow Airport include American, British Airways, and United. Airlines serving Londons Gatwick Airport are American, British Airways, Continental, Delta, Northwest, and TWA. If you are planning to visit only Edinburgh, an auto is not recommended, as the city has excellent taxi service and limited parking.

advice on sites and suggested itineraries, although it does not cover the Isle of Skye. Frommer's Scotland covers all of Scotland in an excellent manner,
including the Isle of Skye. Since we are partial to both series of books, we used both to

lodging and eating. Fast Facts: With one third of England's area (30,000 sq. miles) and one tenth of its population (app. 5 million), Scotland is relatively sparsely populated. The major regions include the Lowlands around Glasgow and Edinburgh, the Border region to the south, and the Highlands and Western Highlands, including the Hebrides Islands. The climate is temperate due to the surrounding seas and rainfall is fairly high, ranging up to 150 inches per year in the Western Highlands. Scotland has its own currency, although England's currency is also utilized. |
